A compass ought to be standard equipment. I had to rescue a couple once who had spent the night on a pontoon boat in fifty degree temps, with no gear besides the swimsuits they were wearing. They survived by crawling under the carpeting on the deck. A basic toolkit would have gotten them home, but some basic survival gear would have made their night a lot more pleasant.
